Purpose:

This position will be filled on the Power Delivery Data Analytics & Innovation team. Key responsibilities as a member of the team are collecting, organizing, mining, and deeply analyzing data to draw conclusions and develop insights that enable better decision-making and operational effectiveness of Georgia Power business units. Data scientists possess a combination of analytical skills, technical expertise, and business acumen in addition to intellectual curiosity that drives their passion to transform raw intelligence into actionable insights that produce desired business outcomes. This position utilizes analytical expertise with large data sets to implement and continuously improve PD’s data strategy.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Mathematics, Statistics (Theoretical/Computational), Machine Learning or Artificial Intelligence. Advanced degree preferred.

  • Proven knowledge of statistical techniques and data science is preferred, including data science research

  • 5+ years of experience working in a fast-paced, competitive organization driven by data and enabled by technology is required

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Strong technical competency and programming skills in large-scale data analysis using coding/querying languages including at least one of Python or R. Others desired to be cognizant of are Spark, SAS, T-SQL, and PL-SQL.

  • Analysis, design, development, test, troubleshooting and documentation of complex systems including several of the following: predictive models, feature extraction, data-driven analysis, application of machine learning algorithms, text mining, decision support, variable selection and model fit

  • Knowledge of data migration and integration across datasets and technology platforms

  • Knowledge doing Machine Learning in the Azure cloud is preferred.

  • Deep analytical capability to debug, monitor, and troubleshoot issues with data solutions

  • Effective communication (verbal/written) and leadership skills to foster enterprise influence on data-driven business decision-making

  • Ability to transform technical jargon into meaningful business insight at varying levels of the organization

  • Comprehensive consulting skills with proven ability to work with and influence others

  • 3+ years hands on experience designing, developing, testing, deploying, and supporting advanced analytics solutions using Microsoft cloud-based tools such as Azure Data Lake, Azure Data Factory, Azure Databricks, Python, Azure Synapse, Azure Key Vault, Power BI, and other data science tools.

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Enable data science change management to track model output and identify how each model is performing. Make recommendations on model edits and when they are needed.

  2. Examine data and develop use cases to identify AI/Machine Learning use cases.

  3. Remain up to date on AI/Machine Learning emerging technology. Educate the team on these and when they should be leveraged.

  4. Devise new algorithmic approaches to solving difficult quantitative problems using large scale enterprise data sources

  5. Adopt new tools and algorithms effectively to improve model performance. Design data experiments to verify assumptions and hypotheses

  6. Complete written documentation and reports of results in the form of business reports, internal technology white papers, and statistical system documentation

  7. Experiment with new algorithms and analytical approaches and report on the impact to model performance

  8. Collaborate with business to identify needs, gaps and opportunities for improved data management and analytical solution delivery

  9. Collaborate with peers; mentoring team members to enhance skills and abilities; providing leadership as required

  10. Stay abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies and seek connections with other leaders within the electric utility industry that are responsible for data analytics within their companies.
