Job Summary:

The purpose of this position is to direct and oversee all aspects of the operations of Southern Company Gas Claims and Leave Management Department.

Business Acumen

  • Develop the vision, policies and goals for the Southern Company Gas claims and leave management department

  • Responsible for all aspects of hiring, training, promoting, and performance management of the claims department

  • Responsible for the department budget

  • Responsible for ensuring that all claims processing is conducted within company established guidelines and according to best practices

  • Identify opportunities and trends for improvements in claims administration

  • Ensure compliance with relevant federal, state and company guidelines including submission of required reporting

  • Responsible for developing and reporting loss information to business units and excess carriers

  • Manage TPA vendors in jurisdictions where the company is not self-administered

Engagement

  • Effectively lead claims department to maximize efficiency and foster productive partnerships with business units

  • Responsible for developing team members to maximize their abilities and achieve department goals

  • Collaborate with various business units to reduce claims volume and expense through early intervention techniques and training

  • Partner with human resources, legal and other business units to assist with issues regarding ADA, FMLA and return to work

  • Develop and manage relationships with outside vendors for both claims and leave management to ensure they meet performance goals and provide quality and cost-effective service

  • Stay abreast of industry developments by participating in state and industry sponsored organizations

  • Demonstrates leadership within team and with business to meet internal and external objectives

  • Deliver high quality work product and services that meet the needs and requirements of internal and external customers, while maintaining productivity and budget

  • Ability to prioritize and orchestrate multiple activities at once to accomplish a goal

  • Ability to identify and marshal resources to achieve department and business objectives

  • Demonstrates accountability for self and team

Functional Expertise

  • Experience managing a claims department

  • Advanced knowledge of insurance administration and claims management of both casualty and workers’ compensation claims

  • Experience administering leave management policies

  • Strong negotiations and decision-making ability

  • Excellent analytical and communication skills

  • Proficient in the use of computers and company standard software including Excel, Microsoft Office, Risk Master and Business Objects

  • Initiates self-learning to improve and expand skill set

Education, Certifications/Licenses:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree

Preferred:

  • CPCU

  • Active Georgia liability adjuster’s license

  • Associate in Claims

  • Associate in Risk Management

Related Work Experience:

Required:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience managing a claims department

  • Minimum 10-15 years of experience adjusting workers’ compensation and liability claims

Preferred:

  • Experience managing a self-insured, self-administered corporate claims department

  • Experience administering leave management policies

Specific Skills & Knowledge:

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of workers’ compensation and tort rules for Georgia, Illinois, Florida, Virginia, Tennessee, Texas, California

  • Knowledge of FMLA, ADA and HIPAA laws

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

• Keyboarding = Constant 67-100%

• Travel = Occasional 25-33%

• On-call = While not on call, must be available in the evenings and weekends in case of emergencies to provide claims support to company
