Environmental Affairs Lab Analyst - Radiochemistry



This position will analyze environmental and plant effluent samples for radioactively, including the sample preparation, laboratory analysis, counting room activities, and associated quality control tasks. These methods and processes are in support of Georgia Power and Southern Nuclear facilities to help company facilities meet or exceed environmental compliance with state and federal regulations.

  • BS degree in Chemistry, Biology or related science.

  • Computer proficiency using Microsoft Office and LIMS (Laboratory Information Management Software) required; Horizon LIMS preferred.

  • Environmental laboratory experience in handling, preparing, and analyzing various environmental samples according to EPA, ASTM, or other protocols; experience with quality control requirements for analytical methods.

  • Knowledge of chemical nomenclature, instrumentation, analytical methods, and EPA methodology supporting radiochemistry analyses.

  • Computer proficiency using instrument and data management software.

  • Ability to use technical procedures to perform analyses and solve technical issues for customers.

  • Understanding of OSHA laboratory safety requirements under 40 CFR 1910.1450.

  • Understanding of NRC Reg Guide 4.15 preferred.

  • Must be detail-oriented, self-directed and possess superior organizational skills.

  • Environmental laboratory experience with a variety of general chemistry instrumentation preferred.

  • Use of technical procedures to perform analyses, troubleshoot and solve technical issues for customers preferred.

  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.


  • Work safely, identify and implement corrective actions for unsafe working conditions.

  • Partner with customers to provide cost effective analytical services for compliance reporting to help ensure the Company maintains compliance with regulatory requirements.

  • Conduct diverse complex chemical analyses using a variety of laboratory instrumentation and analytical methodology; ensure analytical methods comply with accreditation and regulatory requirements.

  • Prepare and analyze environmental and plant effluent samples and interpret results according to operating procedures and applicable standards (EPA, NRC and ASTM methodology).

  • Serve as technical expert for analytical services, which involves working with internal customers, accreditation agencies and regulatory groups to provide cost-effective compliance solutions.

  • Develop and maintain analytical methods and internal procedures to meet regulatory and accreditation requirements and enhance the lab’s quality system.

  • Establish and evaluate instrument and process quality control.
