Description

Flexible on the location being Atlanta, GA or Naperville, IL.

The incumbent plays a key role in all parts of creating, managing and executing programs/projects to help Southern Company Gas identify and execute sales and revenue-generating opportunities. Projects may include: evaluation of new services and products, explorations of new opportunities and technologies and development of marketing efforts. The position is be based in Atlanta or Naperville and will report to the Director of Marketing Special Projects.

The incumbent in this position is responsible for assisting in the identification and execution of special projects. The incumbent is responsible for data management and analysis for the team. He/she is responsible for detailed research, data analysis, data integration, data modeling, requirements mapping, ETL design and development, analysis cube development and BI solution development including presentation layer delivery, and more. The incumbent completes extensive programming for data manipulation, generates various statistical analyses and effectively integrates interprets and presents accurate, actionable, and relevant outcomes. The incumbent oversees and manages the security and integrity of data and develops effective control processes to ensure data integrity, privacy and governance. The incumbent also assists in the creation of business cases, presentations, reports and communications to support the proposal, planning and execution of projects and assists the team in other work as assigned.

This role functions as an internal consultant and requires an understanding and appreciation for natural gas operations, strategic planning/analysis, communications and marketing. This role is a highly visible position that interacts with Southern Company Gas’ most senior leaders frequently. The role requires an individual with a strong ability to build both internal and external relationships. The individual must not only be able to work in a collaborative environment, but also be comfortable leading group discussions with 20 participants and holding peers accountable for deliverables. The role requires a person who is detailed oriented, analytical, strategic thinker, innovative, creative, understands marketing practices and has strong communications and writing skills. The individual in this role is a self-starter and feels comfortable in an ambiguous, constantly evolving environment of shared accountability and can thrive in a fast-paced setting. The position is part of a newly created, dynamic and continually evolving team, thus the requirements of the position might change overtime. The individual in this role must be comfortable with constant change and can easily adapt and thrive in new situations.

Functional Expertise:

  • Is responsible for data management and analysis for the team and has a strong understanding of database development methodology.

  • Leverages quantitative research; relates, compares, models and maps data from different sources and makes logical assumptions; evaluates market conditions, customer data, internal metrics and competitive landscape to identify key business opportunities; analyzes program results and recommend next steps.

  • Integrates and analyzes data derived from a multitude of data sources.

  • Completes extensive programming for data manipulation and generates various statistical analyses.

  • Writes well-structured, production-ready code to support work.

  • Leads and assists in the creation of data warehouses.

  • Works with a variety of technologies (including but not limited to SQL, SQL Server Reporting Services, Excel, SAS) to design, develop and distribute business intelligence solutions.

  • Performs ETL design and development.

  • Creates analysis cube and designs data models.

  • Builds reports, data visualizations, and BI solutions, including presentation layer delivery.

  • Keeps data structured in a way that makes regular analysis easy and flexible.

  • Develops, implements and maintains operational reports and dashboards — ensuring resources are accurate, up-to-date, and can be analyzed to reveal critical insights.

  • Creates data processes.

  • Identifies data anomalies and works with business units to perform root cause analysis and resolves any issues.

  • Creates and maintains quality documentation, metadata, data pull instructions, data dictionaries etc. for technical and non-technical staff.

  • Identifies key information sources, assesses information quality and understands and communicates limitations.

  • Manages large amounts of data and appropriately applies data reduction and exploratory analysis techniques.

  • Accurately reads and interprets financial reports and statements and applies financial analysis to recommend solutions that support business objectives.

  • Identifies patterns and correlations to help the business react to changing conditions.

Business Acumen:

  • Oversees and manages security and integrity of data. Develops effective quality control processes to ensure data integrity, privacy and governance.

  • Possesses the aptitude to quickly learn software platforms such as MS SQL Server, Tableau, and other BI tools (may require development and use of various software packages and systems).

  • Structures analytical paths and selects efficient analytical approaches that fits the situation.

  • Challenges own findings, audits own and team’s analyses and determines their validity.

  • Diagnoses drivers behind performance and surface recommendations.

  • Ensures accurate reporting in the creation of detailed technical specifications containing relevant information such as versioning, testing, and back-end instructions.

  • Utilizes tools to execute customer segmentation strategies aimed at increasing customer acquisition, retention, and reactivation as well as report and analyze campaign performance.

  • Identifies customer trends to determine potential impact and success of proposed strategies. Recommends enhancements to current and proposed offerings.

Engagement:

  • Maintains team Director constantly informed of all project tasks, deadlines and information that may impact the completion of the project or relationship with business units and vendors.

  • Initiates and facilitates project meetings (e.g. internal discovery, vendor selection process, kick off, planning, QA, deployment, etc.).

  • Facilitates customers, end users, and other stakeholders in joint analysis sessions to ensure an understanding of business goals, requirements, and deliverables.

  • Provides weekly status updates of active project plan assignments.

  • Creates documents to communicate and present project progression to stakeholders.

  • Ensures team training and transfer of knowledge tasks to support project deliverables.

  • Ensures internal and external resources are available to meet project demands.

  • Coordinates project implementation with business units.

  • Reviews feedback from marketing campaigns to identify customer/project needs and identify next steps.

  • Gains and maintains trust of team members and influence others to action without direct authority; shares wins and successes and foster open dialogue.

  • Mentors and manages inter-related components (e.g., project teams, consultants).

  • Provides performance feedback of team members.

Education, Certifications/Licenses:

Required:

  • BS/BBA Engineering, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Statistics, or a concentration in a data related field or equivalent work experience.

Preferred:

  • MS/MBA in Engineering, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Statistics, or equivalent

  • MS/MBA degree in Business Analytics, Applied Mathematics

Related Work Experience:

Required:

  • 7-10 years of experience with data analytics with forecasting and/or planning responsibilities.

  • 2 years of database administration or data management experience.

Preferred:

  • Experience with layered systems architectures and multi-tier solutions/designs; data flow between applications using web services, APIs and ETL;

  • Experience querying relational databases such as Oracle and performing data analysis

  • Experience in coding, testing, and implementing campaign data initiatives using real time decision-making marketing technology

  • Experience in database marketing working with campaign strategies and execution

  • Experience in marketing analytics

Applicant may possess a combination of equivalent education and work experience.

Specific Skills & Knowledge:

Required:

  • Technical proficiency in use of query software

  • Knowledge of SSIS, APIs, Kafka or similar experience

  • Programming competency in Visual Basic, R or Python, SQL, SPSS or SAS a plus

  • Familiarity with Hadoop a plus

  • Familiarity with Machine Learning a plus

  • Basic HTML knowledge

  • Knowledge of front-end tools such as query tools, report writers, data mining and analysis tools.

  • Working knowledge of visualization and discovery tools such as SSRS, Tableau or Power BI

  • Advanced level of proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Access, Word, and PowerPoint

  • Technical expertise regarding data models and database design development

  • Ability to locate and summarize data characteristics

  • Advanced analytical skills necessary to research and prepare a variety of complex reports and analyses

  • Ability to design, analyze, translate and present complex data into management information

  • Analytically minded with sharp problem-solving skills

  • Experience in developing reports, dashboards, and data visualization techniques

  • Experience in translating and documenting of business needs to technical requirements

  • Knowledge of financial statements

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Occasional Traveler (20%-30% travel): The incumbent will be required to travel on occasion. Trips may require air travel and/or overnight stay away from home for one or more nights. Works in an office environment.
