Wireless Communication Network Engineer

The Fixed Wireless Support Team is responsible for providing planning, engineering design, engineering consulting, documentation, equipment lifecycle management, and second and third-level technical support for the fixed wireless network infrastructure for the Southern Company and associated subsidiaries. The primary responsibilities for this position will be implementation and support for cellular (LTE) fixed wireless routers.


Remote work from home with strong preference in Georgia, Alabama, or southeast Mississippi. Some travel to project & warehouse locations.

General Job Responsibilities:

  • Central support for cellular router installation issues associated with activation, provisioning, automation process, and hardware.

  • Manual provisioning of cellular routers prior to shipment to the field or as required by support.

  • Troubleshoot cellular router (GE Orbit, Sierra Wireless) issues such as cell connectivity, hardware, certificates, and firewall requests.

  • Perform end-to-end troubleshooting for data and wireless networks.

  • Responsible for development and compliance of engineering standards including documentation, product lifecycle plans, design packages, and implementation.

  • Responsible for coordinating field techs and/or contractors performing functions for network projects.

  • Responsible for providing support to the affiliate Companies on issues related to network planning, engineering design, and engineering consulting.

  • Responsible for planning, design, development, implementation, provisioning and day-to-day operations for the network infrastructure including Cisco routers, switches, and wireless LAN.

Job Requirements:

  • Basic knowledge of telecommunications systems such as fixed data, WLANs, voice and data network systems including IP addressing and naming (DNS, DHCP, and WINS), Web and proxy, Internet, Firewalls, Dynamic Multipoint Virtual Private Network (DMVPN), and Network Address Translation (NAT)

  • Experience with Cisco CLI command structure

  • Experience supporting WAN technologies such as OSPF, BGP, and MPLS.

  • Working knowledge of GE Orbit routers and/or other cellular routers

  • Working knowledge of Cisco Prime and ISE

  • Experience in implementation/support of Cisco switches, routers & wireless controllers/AP’s

  • Understanding and Proficiency of Visio Network Design Tools

  • Demonstrated personal computer skills (i.e., Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.)

  • Must participate in weekly on-call rotation that covers 7x24 hours, which includes weekends.

  • Must be available for callout (rotation) and occasional after-hours work (maintenance)

  • Some overnight travel may be required (<1%)

  • Must be capable of passing extensive drug and background checks

Education / Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering/Technology or related field

  • GE Orbit Fixed Wireless Routers or other cellular routers

  • Network Experience with Cisco Routing/Switching/WLAN

  • Cisco certifications are a plus

    Physical Demands / Work Environment:

The successful candidate must be capable of lifting equipment up to 30 pounds. May require physical effort associated with using the computer to access everyday activities.
