Senior Accountant I - Technical Accounting Research

Description

JOB SUMMARY:

This position has responsibility and oversight over operational controls and business risks to ensure risks to achieving business objectives are addressed and controls and compliance requirements are met. Additionally, this role will have involvement in recurring tasks and special projects as part of the GAS Technical Accounting Research team.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES by COMPETENCY

Functional

  • Assists business with non-key control and SOX deficiency remediation.

  • Assists in the administration of the Oracle account reconciliation tool (ARCS).

  • Assists with the design of new non-key controls and training new control owners & performers of non-key controls.

  • Leads the annual Atlanta Gas Light SOC 1 examination process, including gathering required information, updating the report, and working with the external auditors to ensure timely completion.

  • Conducts annual walkthroughs of processes to update process narratives.

  • Administers non-key control certification process.

  • Assist in the research of accounting and/or disclosure guidance relevant to business units / transactions across the Southern Company Gas organization.

  • Assist in the formal written documentation of accounting issue memorandums including analyses, conclusions, and support for conclusions.

  • Assist in the formal written documentation of accounting policies.

Business Acumen

  • Ensures compliance with policies and procedures.

  • Assists with the identification and remediation of process gaps.

  • Provides well-developed professional expertise and decision-making abilities, specifically related to cause studies and analysis of internal events.

  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and prioritize.

  • Provides guidance to business units and departments regarding process narratives and desktop procedures.

Engagement

  • Works with internal customers on the resolution of operational risks and internal control deficiencies.

  • Communicates and engages with stakeholders for real-time elevation of issues.

  • Works with internal and external customers to resolve problems; answer questions and provide guidance and recommendations on process improvements.

  • Interacts frequently with corporate-level Internal Controls & Compliance team on control issues and improvements.

Driving Results

  • Performs within dynamic environment with heightened sense of urgency and accountability.

  • Involved with annual training on the importance of internal controls.

  • Manages personal performance to achieve performance objectives.

  • Assists with driving results through execution of and adherence to organizational policies.

  • Works in an environment that supports and encourages self-identification of issues within the business.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Certifications/Licenses:

Required:

  • BA/BS in Accounting or Finance

Related Work Experience:

Required:

  • 2 years’ experience in accounting, auditing, risk management or similar function.

Preferred:

  • 3 to 5 years’ experience in accounting, auditing, risk management or other similar function

  • Public accounting experience.

  • Experience producing well-written accounting narratives, memos or other documents.

Specific Skills & Knowledge:

Required:

  • MS Word – intermediate proficiency

  • MS Excel – intermediate proficiency

  • MS PowerPoint – intermediate proficiency

  • SharePoint – intermediate proficiency

  • Ability to prioritize workflow and design/implement control practices

  • Ability to communicate and elevate issues professionally and concisely

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Hybrid work environment (currently 2 office days and 3 remote days)

  • Travel – minimal/as required
