Tax Accountant

Southern Company is seeking an experienced tax accountant for our compliance team. Reporting to the Director, Tax Compliance, the Tax Accountant will be responsible for the preparation of federal and state income tax returns and quarterly payment estimates for Southern Company and its subsidiaries. Other responsibilities are listed below. As a member of the Tax Compliance team, the Tax Accountant will also uphold the Southern Company core values: Superior Performance, Safety First, Total Commitment and Unquestionable Trust.

This position will be located in Atlanta, GA at the Georgia Power Corporate Headquarters building.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Prepares federal and state income tax returns

• Prepares quarterly tax estimates for determining payments to the IRS and states

• Prepares intercompany allocations of consolidated tax data

• Researches tax laws, determines optimum tax treatments of complex transactions and documents conclusions

• Prepares amended income tax returns due to audit settlements

• Assists subsidiaries' tax accounting personnel in identifying and understanding book/tax differences

REQUIREMENTS

Education Requirements:

• BS in Accounting required

• CPA highly preferred

Experience Requirements:

• 5 years Corporate income tax return preparation experience

• Utility accounting experience (highly preferred)

• Tax research experience

• Experience utilizing tax return preparation software (preferably CorpTax software)

• Advanced MS Excel skills

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Ability to apply thorough technical knowledge of income tax returns

• Thorough understanding of Utility issues and accounting

• Strong oral and written communication skills

• Good business judgment
