  • The position leads the Transmission Control Center Operations Planning functions for Georgia Power in preparing the transmission system for safe, reliable, and resilient operations. Operations Planning assesses and coordinates planned outages for maintenance and construction exceeding $1B in capital improvements annually on the Georgia Integrated Transmission System (ITS). Operations Planning includes the System Operator, Operations Planner, Floor Engineer, Prearrange, and Operations Engineer teams. The System Operator desk monitors and adjusts the power system in real-time 24x7, responding to actual system conditions to ensure reliable operations for all planned and unplanned events in accordance with NERC requirements. Operations Planners provide power flow analysis to prepare the system for reliable operations in the 13-month operating horizon. Prearrange provides switching and switching coordination services for 10,000 clearances annually, The Operations Planners, Floor Engineer, and Operations Engineer teams provide engineering and analyst support to support real-time operations, develop operating tools, guidelines, and procedures, shape transmission and generation investment decisions, integrate renewable resources, address NERC compliance requirements, provide technical support and training, and engage with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders related to operating analysis and emergency operations.

  • The position is responsible for developing and leading a team of 45 full time employees including NERC certified Power System Coordinators, Operations Planning Engineers/Analysts, Project Managers, and Supervisors.

  • The successful candidate will gain extensive knowledge of Transmission System Operations and will build strong working relationships throughout Power Delivery and Southern Company, with industry peers, and with a wide range of external clients and stakeholders. The successful candidate will gain experience recruiting, developing, and leading power system coordinators and engineers in a high-reliability control center environment. The successful candidate will recruit and develop first line supervisors and team leaders into highly effective leaders. The successful candidate will also gain subject matter and leadership expertise in many areas of System Operations including power system analysis, generation dispatch, emergency restoration, Energy Management Systems (EMS), renewables integration, NERC compliance, State and Federal regulator policy, the Georgia ITS, and Physical/Cyber security.


Prefer Electrical Engineering (or other relevant) degree

Prefer Systems Operations experience especially in the areas of reliability coordination or operations planning (or transmission planning).

Prefer experience in two or more Transmission related areas (Operations, Maintenance, Construction, EMS, Operations Support, Planning, Protection & Control, Project Management, Resource Planning, Renewables). Also, power system operating experience in Distribution or Generation.

Knowledge of Operations Planning and control center real-time operations, Georgia ITS operating practices, GPC storm and system restoration practices, NERC and FERC requirements applicable to Operations, Transmission construction and maintenance practices related to Operations, and Customer service related to Operations.

Skilled in performance management for individual contributors. Prefer experience in developing supervisors and team leaders. Excellent active listening skills. Develops people through clear, challenging goals and assignments providing frequent, actionable feedback. Builds strong, inclusive teams. Excellent project management skills in working across organizations with diverse stakeholders to deliver process improvements and efficiencies.

Work schedule includes a blend of teleworking and on-site hours.

Lead Operational Planning and real-time System Operator activities for Georgia Power and the Georgia ITS (50%)

  • Ensure Safe and Reliable operation of the GA ITS in real-time and the operations planning horizon.

  • Lead our team in maintaining a comprehensive situational awareness including load/generation patterns, planned/unplanned outages, weather, and external factors affecting power flows and power system security.

  • Engage stakeholders effectively both in daily grid events and enhancing long-term operating practices.

  • Provide Safe and efficient clearance (WRs) services for successful maintenance/construction programs.

  • Work with stakeholders to shape the expansion of the grid to support reliable and efficient future operations.

  • Ensure the Resiliency of the grid and prepare our team for a wide range of natural and manmade threats.

  • Support our Transmission Operators in the timely restoration of the system for routine and major events.

  • Lead in our “Practice like we play” approach to continual training and drills to enhance readiness.

  • Lead in our Safety Excellence culture and engage in frequent observations to reinforce safe behaviors.

  • Lead in our Culture of Compliance and ensure compliance with NERC, FERC, and other requirements.

  • Support the floor in the areas of daily technical assistance, data integrity, operator tools and procedures, process improvements, communication aids, drills, major events, and reliability reporting and compliance.

  • Advise Transmission Planning of operational trends to influence future transmission improvements.

Provide leadership, develop, coach, and mentor our team of 45 System Operators, Engineers, and Supervisors (50%)

  • Build a clear, consensus vision and goals for both the cultural and technical success of our team.

  • Engage daily in coaching and mentoring to ensure all team members are successful in their assignments and growing in their technical and leadership competencies.
