WORK LOCATION

  • This position will be based out of the Energy Center, Birmingham, AL.

  • This position will require a mix of both field and office work.

  • Some office work can be performed remotely (telework/work from home) with the expectation that you can successfully telework and would be willing to travel to work and/or field location on a routine (to be determined) and as-needed basis.

Summary of Position

The civil site designer in the Civil Design Group will be responsible for producing civil grading design drawings for transmission projects in Alabama and Mississippi. The successful candidate will also provide support in the following areas: technical support and design direction to technicians. Interface with other departments to assure accurate project scoping, develop best practice designs, and provide field support for the Alabama Power and Mississippi Power transmission substation projects. This position will require some field visits and may involve occasional overnight travel (approximately 25%) and will require availability to be in the office a minimum of three days a week and the ability to work successfully in a remote/virtual environment with access to internet service the remainder of the week. Relocation assistance may be provided if the successful candidate does not currently live within a reasonable commute distance.

Responsibilities include:

  • Prepare layouts and conceptual design in support of lead design engineers.

  • Design civil projects with limited supervision for electrical substations.

  • Ability to work proficiently both as part of a team and independently.

  • Assist with training classes for AutoCAD Civil 3D

  • Manage the day-to-day assignments of subordinate designers and drafters, continuously monitoring their progress and reporting task status to the group supervisor or lead design engineer.

  • Ability to review and evaluate the work of other group designers and drafters involved in the design of civil projects

  • Ability to develop project or task scope definitions, provide schedule input, prepare material takeoffs and assist with cost estimates.

  • Provide support for all construction activities related to the civil aspects of electrical substations.

  • Coordinate work with other internal design groups, external clients, vendors, and contractors.

  • Must possess strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple projects and assignments to meet defined schedules and deliverables.

  • Serve as a damage assessment team member after major storms, after receiving the company-provided training. This will require overnight travel within the Southern Company system.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

The following education levels are preferred for this position:

  • A minimum of 5 to 10 years of experience in civil site drafting and design

  • High School graduate or equivalent required

  • Technical training or certifications preferred

  • Autodesk Certification preferred

Experience:

  • Solid experience in grading design, erosion control design, hydrology and storm water design is required.

  • Prior experience in construction estimating and construction administration is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Very experienced user of current version of AutoCAD Civil 3D

  • Proficient in the design of Grading, Drainage, Erosion Control and Stormwater Management

  • Experience training and developing others in the use of AutoCAD Civil 3D

  • General knowledge of Federal, State, and local permitting within Alabama.

  • Experience in developing CAD standards

  • Ability to process and implement survey data to create 2D/3D surfaces and contours.

  • Proficient using Microsoft Office products such as MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

  • Excellent organizational skills

  • Good technical writing skills.
