There are multiple engineering positions available within PD Birmingham Distribution and these positions will be filled at levels depending on the successful candidates' education, experience, and skills. Successful candidates will be placed in engineering offices across PD Birmingham. It is expected that the successful candidate will be knowledgeable of the design, operation, and maintenance of overhead and underground electric distribution systems.
The position will be required to manage all day-to-day engineering work activities in an assigned area. The primary job duties will be utilization of sound engineering practices in the preparation of work estimates to provide service to new customers, to maintain and to improve the electrical distribution system. There will be opportunities for engineering major projects such as roadway relocations, budget items, reliability projects, subdivisions, and large commercial projects. Superior customer service will be expected from the successful candidate. Duties will also include investigating and resolving customer service issues and working with Line crew Operations. The candidates will also be expected to be available after business hours for local, out-of-town, and out-of-state trouble and storm response and will provide general leadership and coordination during storm restoration efforts. The candidates filling these positions will also be expected to model Our Values and exercise leadership in safety. - BS degree, or higher, in Engineering is required
Distribution engineering experience is preferred.
Experience in engineering, design, and construction of the distribution electrical system.
Proven record of success in a team environment.
Previous experience in service restoration efforts is desired.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of company policies, NEC and NESC is preferred
Knowledge and experience in computer applications used by distribution engineers (IDMS, JETS, CSS, DistGIS, SOCKET, among others) is preferred
Knowledge of distribution coordination schemes and reliability efforts is preferred
Ability to effectively communicate and work well with employees, customer, developers, consultants, city and state agencies and others
Effective time management skills
Ability to make sound engineering decisions during emergency situations
Ability to exercise a high level of leadership
Knowledge of and ability to apply APCO safety and health rules
Must be on the official clearance list or possess the ability to achieve in short term.
Must be available to work outside of normal duty hours to provide leadership and support to operating personnel in restoring electric service to customers
