Financial Analyst, Risk Control

Risk Control is the independent risk monitoring and oversight function for the Southern Company Fleet Operations and Trading and Southern Power Commercial Optimization and Trading organizations. As a member of the Risk Control group, you will be responsible for monitoring and assessing the risks of the company’s asset optimization and trading activities; and supporting risk policy and controls compliance. This includes valuation of positions, measurement of market and credit risks, monitoring of risk limits, month-end derivative accounting, performing controls related to energy trading, and negotiating master trading agreements. This position is open to new grads or early career talent.


  • Engage with traders to understand products and strategies to evaluate risk and implement appropriate risk management policies.

  • Develop and run risk models to measure and monitor market and credit risk associated with the Company’s asset optimization and trading activities, including VaR, stress testing and scenario analysis.

  • Maintain and develop forward curves used in the daily portfolio valuation.

  • Performs the daily trade confirmation processes to ensure completeness and proper documentation.

  • Performs daily price reporting to external price index developers.

  • Establish counterparty credit limits and monitor exposure to ensure appropriate collateral is in place for trading.

  • Interface with IT to ensure systems are maintained and working properly.

  • Evaluate derivative transactions to determine appropriate accounting treatment and documentation, including normal purchase and normal sale, or the need for input from Research Accounting.

  • Ensure all necessary effectiveness testing and correlation analysis occurs in order to maintain hedge accounting treatment.

  • Perform month-end and quarter-end derivative accounting functions and SOX related controls.

  • Performa analysis and assist in the development and maintenance of risk policies and controls.

  • Negotiate master trading agreements and credit support agreements.

  • Present to the SCS and SPC risk oversight committees.

  • Supports medium and long-term projects to improve risk control processes.


Education Requirement

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, finance, economics, mathematics, statistics, engineering, or similar field is required unless specific knowledge and experience can be demonstrated required.

  • A relevant advanced degree or on-going progress towards an advanced degree or certification in a relevant field is preferred.

Experience Requirement

  • Minimum 2 to 5 years in one of the following areas: business, accounting, finance, economics, mathematics, statistics, engineering, or similar field preferred.

  • Knowledge of power and gas markets, preferred.

  • Experience in financial analysis, preferred.

  • Experience with SQL and databases a plus.

  • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment

  • Ability to effectively communicate and coordinate with peers and management at various levels.

  • Must be comfortable in a fast-paced environment

  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to quickly learn new concepts and skills.

  • General knowledge of energy markets and trading instruments such as forwards, swaps, and options

  • Attention to detail, ability to balance multiple tasks, good organizational skills, and ability to learn quickly.

  • Ability to understand/learn IT systems specific to Risk Control and how they interface and relate to one another.
