Risk Control is a part of the Southern Company Finance organization that reports through Treasury. Risk Control serves as the independent risk monitoring and oversight function for the Southern Company Commercial Operations organization and for the Southern Power Company. As a member of the Risk Control team, the successful candidate will be responsible for monitoring and assessing the risks of the company’s asset optimization and trading activities; and supporting risk policy and controls compliance. This includes valuation of power and gas positions, measurement of market and credit risks, monitoring of risk limits, and generating reports containing such information.

This position is located at the Energy Center in Birmingham, Alabama and reports to the Manager of Risk Control.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support adherence to the Southern Company Risk Policy including monitoring, oversight, and interpretations of the policy

  • Run valuation systems; analyze results and reports. Provide ad-hoc risk analyses and valuation.

  • Perform quantitative studies to support risk management policies, including credit limits, volumetric

  • limits, and value-at-risk limits.

  • Assist in the creation and maintenance of tools to support valuation of non-standard energy products

  • Interface with IT to ensure systems are maintained, working properly, and modified as needed from time

  • to time

  • Calculate and monitor credit exposure, mark-to-market valuation and value-at-risk exposure; and take appropriate actions to notify management and traders of credit limitations and out of compliance situations

  • Support management reporting including the completion of committee meeting presentations and communications

  • Document and perform control activities necessary to comply with internal policies and Sarbanes-Oxley

REQUIREMENTS

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in technical or analytical field (e.g. Engineering, Finance, Economics, Mathematics, or similar field)

  • MBA or advanced degree in these areas is a plus, but not required

Experience

  • Experience or a working knowledge of energy trading, wholesale contracts, power system operations, competitive energy markets, system planning, and production costing is desired.

  • Financial and/or statistical modeling experience is strongly preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficiency with standard analytical and business software such as Microsoft Office

  • Self-starter with attention to detail, ability to balance multiple tasks, good organizational skills, and ability to learn quickly

  • Natural curiosity to learn new concepts with a questioning attitude to develop new methods

  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment

  • Familiarity of risk concepts such as credit risk, exposure, and valuation

  • General knowledge of energy markets
