Financial Analyst – Financial Evaluation & Analysis
JOB SUMMARY
Southern Power’s Financial Evaluation & Analysis organization is part of Southern Power Finance. This position is accountable for performing financial analysis, financial model development, risk/return analysis, and generation business case development. This position also supports the structuring and implementation of tax equity transactions for renewable assets. These activities are done in support of Southern Power Company’s (SPC) strategic growth initiatives and wholesale marketing efforts. This position is located in Birmingham, Alabama, in the Energy Center at the Colonnade. Travel to Atlanta and customer locations across the U.S. is sometimes required but not frequent.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to gain expertise in (a) financial valuation of renewable and gas projects, including the application of relevant accounting concepts, (b) various planning and forecasting functions of the utility industry, and (c) the structure of power markets across the U.S. The candidate will support the team by developing acquisition and development business cases and interpreting forecast results using statistical and financial models. Other areas the candidate will have the opportunity to work with include, but are not limited to:
Asset acquisitions and understanding the transaction prices of projects given a certain risk profile
Tax equity partnership deal structuring and implementation
Understanding forecasts used in modeling including fuel costs, load/economic forecasts, existing resources, new generation technologies and costs, environmental requirements, and financial hurdles
Acquisitions & development of gas and renewable power assets, including but not limited to wind, solar, and storage facilities
Understanding energy markets and legislation and their impact on individual projects
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education
BS in Engineering, Finance, Accounting, Economics, Math, or other related technical fields is highly desired
MS in these fields or an MBA is desired
Experience
Experience in one or more of the following areas is desired:
Wholesale/retail utility finance (including proforma & cash flow analysis)
Economic evaluation
Project valuation
Net present value analysis
Risk analysis
Structured finance and/or tax equity transactions
Tax accounting
Renewable or gas power development & financing
System planning activities/modeling
Power system economics
Wholesale product structuring
Power pool/plant economic operations
Experience with generation development, generation asset acquisition, strategic planning, financial planning, and wholesale business development is also desirable
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Strong problem-solving skills with a desire to understand complex problems is required
Excellent teamwork, communication, and interpersonal skills are required
Proficiency with standard business software such as Excel, Word, Access, and PowerPoint is required
Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel and VBA is highly desired

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Develop business cases, financial analysis, and risk analysis for renewable (including storage) and gas generation acquisition opportunities for SPC
Develop and implement processes and tools that allow for financial evaluations of business opportunities
Develop financial structuring around tax benefits for renewable asset acquisitions and developments
Develop financial projections for SPC assets
Work closely with internal and external groups to identify key risk areas for project valuations and collaborate to ensure all items are properly included within the financial model
Measure financial risks associated with wholesale generation assets and establish appropriate project hurdle rates for new generation investments
Work closely with both internal and external groups to support the structuring and implementation of financing activities including tax equity financing or tax credit transfers
