GIS Technician


Distribution GIS (DistGIS) plays a vital role in Alabama Power Company's Lighting Services daily operations. The DistGIS database serves as the asset repository for facilities data and drives applications such as CymDist (Distribution system analysis program) and IDMS (Integrated Distribution Management System). This position is responsible for data entry, processing, and maintenance of Distribution data in accordance with PD Technology work procedures. The successful candidate will be responsible for data entry using GIS, with the ability to differentiate between both PSC and FCC regulated and non-regulated assets is a plus. This position will require learning all about the Distribution system and Equipment, DistGIS and safe work procedures in the office.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate accurate and timely updates to the DistGIS database regarding completed field work.

  • Understanding of basic electric distribution design and construction

  • Experience with lighting types, fixtures and controls

  • Familiarity with pole attachments (especially beneficial for future co-location efforts)

  • Experience manipulating shapefiles

  • Ability to differentiate between both PSC and FCC regulated and non-regulated assets a plus

  • Familiar with FME and Python a plus

  • Experience with creating and handling web services a plus

  • Maintain high standards for data quality within the DisGis system.

  • Reconcile data conflicts

  • Research work order information using DETS, JETS, Distribution Materials Catalog and Distribution Construction Standards

  • Provide mapping/technical support for our Engineering staff.

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent

  • Associate or Bachelors Degree in a GIS related field is a plus.

  • Certificate in GIS is a plus


  • Experience working with ESRI’s ArcMap and Schneider’s ArcFM editing tools in Distribution electric systems.
