This requires talented and motivated engineers to develop strategy, build and manage technology research programs and field demonstrations/labs. The Power Delivery R&D manager will be responsible for leading and supervising a group of such engineers in the power delivery area. The research manager’s recognized expertise will be leveraged internally for technology and strategic guidance as well as externally in consortiums and other forums to represent Southern Company’s interests on technology topics. Some travel will be required - approximately 50%.

Job Requirements:

  • BS in Electrical Engineering is required

  • Advanced degree (M.S., PhD) strongly preferred

  • Proven people leadership, mentoring, performance management and teambuilding skills, with the ability to build and foster relationships

  • Demonstrated technical knowledge in power system architecture, operations, design, and/or maintenance

  • Excellent oral/written communication skills along with exceptional presentation capabilities especially those required for executive level briefings

  • Experience developing research programs, portfolios and proposals to fund research activities, especially proposals to external funding entities such as DOE and EPRI

  • Strong program and project management skills

  • Be able to develop and communicate the value proposition of the research program and projects in a clear and concise manner

Job Responsibilities:

  • Place high priority on workplace safety, diversity and inclusion

  • Provide leadership, mentoring, performance management and teambuilding to group of power delivery research engineers

  • Provide effective and timely staff and executive level technology transfer to bring new options/knowledge to strategic decision making

  • Secure funding to augment budget for research activities

  • Manage the power delivery R&D budget as well as the power delivery portion of the EPRI budget

  • Consult with individuals and organizations within and external to Southern to assess the status, performance, feasibility and cost of a wide range of innovative technology options. This includes universities, vendors, national labs and government, consortiums and other relevant parties

  • Provide specific technology information to company executives as requested

  • Participate in time-critical technology teams (project evaluation, technical path decisions, etc.)

  • Manage power delivery contracts for R&D

  • Represent company and champion its interests in external forums
