Project Manager, Construction (Energy Projects)


Southern Company is seeking an experienced project manager to lead Energy Services projects and maintain control of schedule, cost, safety, quality, and customer expectations/satisfaction. In addition, the Project Manager will present to management and/or customers on project updates, project cycle, and expected results.

Reporting to the Manager of Construction, the Project Manager will be responsible for managing all vendor relationships throughout the installation. In addition, this position will ensure projects are closed on time and in scope. In this role, the Project Manager will create and execute project work plans and revise as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements. The Project Manager will bring project management as well as supervisory skills to the organization. This position creates an opportunity to contribute to the success of the organization and the success of large federal facilities operations by establishing critical energy efficiency projects. The Project Manager will contribute to projects associated with renewable energy products and developing energy efficiency technologies associated with energy efficiency and energy resilience for federal facilities operations.

Leads moderately complex projects that generally have been assigned a medium to high corporate priority. Maintains control of schedule, cost, safety, quality, and customer expectations/satisfaction at all times. Presents to management and/or customers on project updates, project cycle, and expected results. Responsible for managing all vendor relationships throughout the installation. Ensures projects are closed on time and in scope. Creates and executes project work plans and revises as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements. Identifies resources needed and assigns individual responsibilities. Manages day-to-day operational aspects of a project and scope. Reviews deliverables prepared by team before passing to client. Effectively applies our methodology and enforces project standards. Prepares for engagement reviews and quality assurance procedures. Minimizes our exposure and risk on project. Manages project budget.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Methodology - Understanding of Project Management Institute's (PMI) methodology and key knowledge areas; Integration, Scope, Time, Cost, Quality, Human Resources, Communications, Risk and Procurement Management

  • Communication/Coordination - Responsible for communication and status reporting to project staff, customer and management

  • Responsible for work plan, managing project resources, duty assignment, responsibilities, scope of authority and provides technical advice and problem resolution to all aspects of project

  • Fiscal - Responsible for tracking projects expenditures and installation progress through reviews of status reports prepared by project personnel and modifies schedules of plans as required. Maintains full financial accountability to project; requires ability to forecast financial trends across project, ability to understand internal and external client cost structures and integrate

  • Quality - Maintain full accountability to project quality; conducting inspections of work site, ensuring workmanship meets installation required quality standards and expectations

  • Customer Service - Provide responsive, concise, and professional support to all customers and other personnel and ensures timely follow-up on all customer concerns and issues

  • Determines appropriate revenue recognition, ensures timely and accurate invoicing, and monitors receivables for project. Follows up with clients, when necessary, regarding unpaid invoices. Analyzes project profitability, revenue, margins, bill rates and utilization. Ensures project documents are complete, current, and stored appropriately. Tracks and reports team hours and expenses on a weekly basis

Education and Experience:

  • College Diploma, or equivalent, in Building Mechanics

  • Extensive experience (more than 7 years) in mechanical HVAC systems plus strong Project Management and supervisory skills or equivalent academic education and experience

  • Project design and programming skills are desirable

  • Strong knowledge of financial reports and cost control is essential, as are interpersonal skills


  • Excellent cost/benefit analytical skills and budget management ability

  • Excellent written, verbal and effective communication skills

  • Ability to learn in detail Peoplesoft procurement software

  • Ability to comprehend and communicate technical information

  • MS Office suite - intermediate proficiency
