SCS Operations Services – Continuous Improvement & Learning

This position will be located at The Energy Center in Birmingham, AL


As Southern Company and its industry continues to evolve, the Continuous Improvement & Learning (CI&L) department is focused on helping business units work effectively by improving how we share ideas, communicate and institutionalize learnings, and simplify processes. CI&L provides support to all business units inside Southern Company Operations.

This role contributes to CI&L’s objectives by developing and executing organizational readiness and communication strategies to compel knowledge sharing and process improvement, and drive employee engagement towards a culture of learning and improvement.


  • Develop and execute organizational readiness strategies to support learning and improvement efforts

  • Collaborate with leadership to evaluate and improve stakeholder readiness to enable change from current state to a sustained desired state

  • Facilitate change impact analysis, gap analysis, and resistance planning as well as the accompanying corrective actions

  • Create and manage measurement systems to monitor the effectiveness of improvements over time

  • Develop communications approach that engages those impacted by change and ensures appropriate sponsorship from management

  • Research, write, edit and produce a wide range of communication material, including, correspondence, employee memos, FAQs, presentations, etc.

  • Create and maintain branding collateral (video, print, digital content)

  • Coordinate with others to produce and maintain communication material and branding collateral

  • Ensure messages are consistent with those of Southern Company and the Operations organization



  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations or other relevant field is required

  • Certificate or degree in Organizational Change Management or equivalent is a plus


  • Applicable experience in a communications, public relations, branding or marketing roles is required

  • Experience developing and implementing strategic communication plans is required

  • Experience applying change management methodologies to support organizational and individual change is highly desired

  • Demonstrated experience writing in a variety of forms is required (i.e. talking points, presentations, print publications, websites, video, Q&As, business-specific communications, etc.) is required

  • Content marketing experience is preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Working knowledge of change management principles and methodologies

  • Working knowledge of communication, branding, and marketing principles and methodologies

  • Able to identify and apply creative and non-traditional communication methods

  • Able to build effective partnerships in a technical, cross-functional, and matrixed organization

  • Able to work effectively at all levels in an organization

  • Outstanding written and presentation skills

  • This position can require some travel – up to 25% per year

  • Occasional overnight travel is possible
