WORK LOCATION
This position will be based out of the Energy Center, Birmingham, AL.
This position will require a mix of both field and office work.
Some office work can be performed remotely (telework/work from home) with the expectation that you can successfully telework and would be willing to travel to work and/or field location on a routine (to be determined) and as-needed basis.
SUMMARY OF POSITION
The structural designer in the Civil Design Group will be responsible for structural design support for transmission projects in Alabama and Mississippi. The Designer will produce engineering drawings, specifications, and material requirements for structural steel and concrete foundations, etc. with an emphasis on safety, quality, scheduling, and costs. This position will require some travel (approximately 25%) and will require availability to be in the office a minimum of three days a week and the ability to work successfully in a remote/virtual environment with access to internet service the remainder of the week. Relocation assistance may be provided if the successful candidate does not currently live within a reasonable commute distance.
Responsibilities Include:
Make SAFETY our number one priority using a “Safety First” mentality and leading by example.
Prepare high quality drawings needed to construct substation and transmission facilities using CAD-based tools, based on Southern Company design standards.
Coordinate and communicate with other departments associated with Civil Design.
Provide support to Constructions Services, Substation Construction, Transmission Line Construction, Field Services, Project Management and Substation Maintenance.
Perform site visits for projects, including pre-construction meetings, during construction and post-construction. Some overnight travel will be required.
Participate in design review meetings.
Support Southern Company’s design standardization effort.
Handling multiple tasks simultaneously, setting priorities, and using effective time management and organizational skills to achieve project team goals.
Provide assistance as part of a storm restoration team after major storm events in the Southern Company service territory.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education :
AutoCAD training, experience or certification is required.
A two-year degree from a technical school or university is preferred.
Experience:
10 plus years structural steel detailing experience including commercial, industrial, stairs, handrails, etc.
Experience in creating substation drawings a plus.
Experience as a contractor or consultant to Georgia Power, Alabama Power, or Southern Company a plus.
Experience as a structural steel detailer and checker.
Experience using AutoCAD at a high level.
Experience talking to steel fabrication shops and answering shop problems.
Experience using 3D modeling software such as SDS Design Data or Tekla or similar software.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Working knowledge of AISC, ASCE, ACI codes.
Working knowledge of AWS welding standards.
Working knowledge of OSHA codes as it relates to steel design.
Experience with analyzing steel connections.
Experience in reinforced concrete design.
Design experience in transmission structures is a plus, but not required
Ability to coordinate multiple projects.
Manage workload of drafters.
