This position will be located at the Alabama Power Corporate Headquarters in Birmingham, AL .

Summary of Position Duties

This position is responsible for coordinating and performing transmission planning studies and analysis on the Southern Company Bulk Transmission System related to a variety of processes such as: new generation siting options, generation designations, unit retirement evaluations, Integrated Resource Plan support, renewable and capacity RFP generation procurement programs, NERC/SERC related compliance studies, etc.

The engineer will be responsible for performing steady-state power flow evaluations, under multiple generation and load scenarios, in order to identify potential transmission system constraints, evaluate the robustness of existing planned transmission improvements, and/or identify new transmission improvements to ensure compliance with NERC, SERC, and Southern Company transmission planning criteria. These studies involve scoping relevant modeling assumptions, building transmission models for the identified scenarios, performing power flow analysis, identifying transmission solutions and costs, and developing final reports and presentations. The engineer will work with multiple groups to identify transmission improvements and evaluate them based on benefit, feasibility, and cost effectiveness to ensure the best overall solution.

In addition, Transmission Planning engineers must be able to coordinate and work closely with multiple groups (e.g. other Transmission Planning teams, Operations, Resource Planning, Operating Company Transmission and Generation departments, etc.) in order to gain input and consensus on transmission expansion planning decisions as well as provide critical input into generation decisions. They will be responsible for presenting study results to management and internal/external customers for information and approval. The engineer will have the opportunity to work on a variety of study types and processes that are very relevant to current industry activities and impactful to future business decisions being made by Southern Company and the Operating Companies.

Education Requirements

  • B.S. degree or higher in Engineering (Electrical Engineering preferred)

  • Specialization in Power Systems desired

Job Requirements

  • Scope and perform steady-state power flow transmission modeling studies for the bulk transmission system

  • Coordinate with multiple groups and internal customers within SCS and the Operating Companies

  • Coordinate with others in Transmission Planning to develop reliable, innovative and cost-effective solutions to transmission system limits identified from studies

  • Understand transmission problems, solutions (including alternatives), and provide informative reports and presentations related to identified issues and associated system improvements

  • Very limited travel may be required, but is not extensive

Experience Requirements

  • Prior exposure to PSS/E and computer modeling of electrical power systems is preferred, but not required

  • General Transmission, Distribution and Resource Planning knowledge and related experience is a plus

  • General knowledge of transmission policy and the Open Access Transmission Tariff is a plus

  • General industry knowledge of FERC, NERC, and SERC is a plus
