UTILITY SPECIALIST

Job Summary

We are looking for an energetic and career oriented individual to join our System Operations team. The Utility Specialist position is an entry level position with advancement opportunities for motivated individuals who perform successfully. Work is predominantly outdoors and in all weather conditions.

The individuals must be able to travel. The individual must be able to drive safely, work extended hours; travel 5% of the time, and wear company provided Personal Protective Equipment. This position may be in various locations throughout the Nicor Gas service territory.

This position is a DOT (Department of Transportation) covered classification and is subject to random drug and/or alcohol screening.

Job Responsibilities

General Duties:

  • Must be able to read and comply with all required company standards and procedures.

  • Must work in a team environment.

  • Hand excavate in an ergonomically safe manner.

  • Load and unload equipment, material, job site debris and maintain housekeeping according to Nicor’s safety standards and procedures.

  • Maintain tools and equipment.

  • Drive company vehicles, valid driver’s license.

  • Install meter devices, piping and materials.

  • Read correctly a 4 – 5 dial gas meters.

  • Correctly enter the information into minicomputer with numbered key board.

  • Hand dig - spade or shovel.

  • Use of small hand tools.

  • Locate company facilities.

  • Perform inside and outside Leak Surveys of customers premises.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Must possess a High School diploma or GED.

  • Must be able to wear company provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

  • Ability to work extended hours to include nights, weekends and holidays when required.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class D Illinois Driver's License or equivalent from surrounding states.

  • Ability to work in all types of weather extremes.

  • Ability to drive safely in all weather and road conditions.

  • Vision - ability to see, observe, and perform work on company meters and equipment.

  • Work in bending, squatting, crouching, kneeling body position.

  • Ability to lift and transport 40-50 lbs. material.

  • Work overhead.

  • Walk 4 to 6 hours a day, walk on uneven terrain, climb, pull and push.

  • Ability to communicate over company radio and telephone with customers.

  • Hand/eye coordination.

  • Distinguish gas odor, smell.

  • Open and close gates and doors using keys.

  • Climb up and down stairs.

  • Operate a keyboard and transport it (3 lbs.).

  • Work in all types of weather.

Desired Qualifications

Previous experience in construction such as Underground Utility, Trenching Equipment, Welding, Carpentry, Plumbing, Pipefitting, Farm Ranch Hand and/or Landscaping.

Knowledge of Pipeline Coding

Previous Military experience.
