WORK LOCATION
This position may have some flexibility for remote teleworking occasionally but must maintain a consistent presence at Southern Company Generation Plant sites
The successful candidate must currently reside within the traditional Southern Company Generation footprint – Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi
TR AVEL
This position will require travel (travel time is variable over the course of the year, but at certain times can be over 75%)
Travel is typically seasonal (mainly Spring and Fall) based upon Plant Outage Schedules.
This will include overnight travel and will be primarily within the Southern Company Generation Fleet, to include GA, AL, MS, NC, and TX.
This will also include any travel associated with shop inspections/surveillance that may be needed.
JOB SUMMARY
This position provides leadership, direction and technical oversight for the performance of non-destructive examination and testing of plant equipment and components at various Electric Generating Facilities throughout the Southern Company Generation Fleet.
This position will primarily support the North Georgia Region (Bowen, Hammond, Wansley, and McDonough) Generating Plants. However, this position will also support other NDE needs across the Southern Company Generating Fleet and will require travel to support these locations. These positions are filled at a Non-exempt level 7 or 8, depending on background and experience.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide technical oversight for various non-destructive testing inspections throughout fleet.
Perform audits over contract NDE resource standards, processes and work products.
Develop associated Audit Reports and review with contract NDE resources.
Develop governance and standards for non-destructive testing practices performed within Southern Company Fleet.
Perform inspection and testing in non-destructive methods utilizing experience and certifications, calibrated equipment, written practices, and procedures (e.g. ultrasonic, liquid penetrant, film interpretation, etc.).
Supervise the performance of non-destructive testing methods by other NDE technicians (including radiography). Scope may include field inspection/testing at our generating plants, shop and field surveillance/inspections and work at other company entities (gas lines, corporate offices, etc.).
Accept/reject items or processes based on non-destructive testing, field inspection or surveillance to assure maximum quality and safety.
Assist in the recommendation of equipment purchases that may have long range impact on work commitments and/or costs as required.
Utilize resources and equipment to support emergency requests and minimize impact on previously scheduled commitments.
Recommend inspection/testing activities that will identify deficiencies in workmanship/equipment and participate in their implementation when required.
Must be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in the event of an emergency.
Participate in “on the job training” and other training classes.
Attend departmental and section meetings as required.
Review and evaluate manpower and equipment to ensure it is capable and sufficient to satisfy work requirements.
Coordinate support at our sites across multiple parties and efficiently communicate with vendors, peers, supervision, etc.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge & Experience
Technical knowledge with verifiable, active certifications in one or more of the following non-destructive testing techniques. Note that 6 Level II Certifications are strongly preferred out of the 7 Core Testing Techniques (as noted below).

Ultrasonic Time of Flight Diffraction Testing
- *PLEASE NOTE* - Recertification to Southern Company standards by the Corporate Level III is required within 6 months for 5 of the Core ASNT Level II Certifications listed above.
Experience in the following types of industrial inspections and practices is also highly preferred.
