Electrical CAD Designer (Microgrid/Power Distribution Systems)

Job Summary:

The primary duties of the PowerSecure Construction Engineering Electrical Designer are to work with the project team to develop construction document sets, perform power system studies, and support our sales team with proposal drawings. Developing code compliant construction documents with accuracy and speed is the main goal for this position.

Minimum Qualifications: (Education, Experience, Knowledge, and Skills):

Construction Engineering Electrical Designer will be required to work normal business hours (1st shift) onsite at the Durham, NC campus; remote or hybrid accommodations may be considered. To perform successfully in this role, an individual must be able to perform proficiently within each duty and responsibility outlined in this description; work must meet quality standards and will be delivered within prescribed timelines.

  • Minimum High School Diploma or Equivalent.

  • Has a minimum of five (5) years’ experience using CAD software to specify and design electrical systems, electrical schematics, equipment for power generation, electrical distribution controls, and various other business driven electrical concept plans.

  • Has a minimum of three (3) years’ experience working with switchgear, panelboards, transformers, electrical diagrams, and other related electrical design concepts.

  • Skilled in interpreting and conceptualizing documents which may include work instructions, written directions, and markups to electrical drawings; also, must possess the ability to interpret and apply building codes (NEC, NFPA, IEEE, and all applicable AHJ codes and standards).

  • Experienced using Adobe and Microsoft Office applications to include Word, Excel, and Outlook.

  • Proficient in the English Language; must be able to read, write, and communicate effectively.

  • Remain very well organized, possess a keen attention to detail, and a pride in the quality of your contributions.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Construction Electrical Designers must be able to develop and design electrical construction documents and use CAD software to develop the drawings with speed and accuracy. Drawings include site plans, one-line diagrams, electrical risers, schematics, electrical details, specifications, and sequence of operations.

  • Thorough understanding and interpretation of domestic electrical and building codes.

  • Strong work ethic, and self-starter who takes initiative. Stays on task during independent contributions but is equally capable of working under supervision.

  • Takes ownership of assigned tasks in a timely manner and learn new principal ideas and concepts.

  • Possesses tactful and effective communication skills; collaborate with peers and leadership to develop solutions.

  • Maintains safe and healthy work environment by following company standards and procedures while complying with legal regulations.

  • Reviews O&M manuals for project close-outs and submittal packages for customer approval.

  • Assembles and reviews permitting packages including plotting construction drawings, drafting letters, transmittals and having the engineer sign and seal documents as required.

  • Assist with the development of power system studies, to include coordination studies, short circuit studies and arc flash studies.

  • Communication and cooperation with the EPC engineering team members, Project Team members, sales, and product engineering groups to ensure quality and accuracy of deliverables while maintaining schedule integrity.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Limited travel will be required. Less than 10%

  • Must be able to work at a desk and use a computer for extended periods of time.

  • Office environment.

  • Required to sit at a desk throughout the day with occasionally walking around the campus.
