Southern Company Regulatory Compliance Engineer in Durham, North Carolina


PowerSecure is adding a Regulatory Compliance Engineer to our growing Production Engineering Team. This position will be based out of our Durham, NC office; however, we are currently working remotely. The primary duty of the Regulatory Compliance Engineer is to provide Codes and Standards guidance, management, training, and ongoing file management for our New Product Introduction (NPI) files or existing files. Although primarily for industry safety standards like UL, other safety and technical codes and standards may be required from time to time as we expand our markets and product lines, e.g., OSHA, EU CE Mark, etc. Design review and standard expertise services for our low and medium-voltage distributed energy resources (DERs). This will be based on customer or internally provided plans and specifications that will be submitted and then released for implementation in accordance with engineering procedures and standards.

  • Ability to critically analyze problems and develop effective solutions.

  • Excellent time management, leadership, organization, and prioritization skills.

  • Public speaking qualities that can be utilized as a training and mentoring entity.

  • Proficient with MS Office applications: Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.

  • Proficient with reviewing 2D and 3D design deliverables as well as Bills of Materials and cut sheets.

  • Proficient with reviewing standards and specifications against design.

  • ERP experience preferred.

  • Working understanding NFPA, NEC, ISO, UL, IEC, CE, ASME, and other codes related to electronics, energy storage, and power distribution.

  • Must educate themselves with the subject matter, codes and standards, and competitive landscape to continue learning and growing as an engineer.

  • Work as part of the Microgrid Engineering team as an integral part of a fast-paced product development team.

  • Participate in the real-time design of products to ensure compliance and reduce the risk of rework.

  • Develop compliance reports with gaps and violations and proposed means of rectification.

  • Design for Manufacturability, reliability, field maintainability.


  • Minimum of a four-year degree in an Engineering/Design or related technical field.

  • PE license.

  • 5+ years of experience in a related technical, regulatory compliance role.

  • 3+ years of equivalent manufacturing experience with the production of industry-leading projects focused on power distribution, energy storage, and electronics.

  • Strong knowledge and expertise in reviewing specifications against designs, identifying gaps or conflicts, and creating reports for reviews with Product Management and Production Engineering staff.

  • Ability to travel occasionally 10%-15%.

  • Familiar with 2-D and 3-D CAD software, preferably AutoDesk products.
