Job Summary

The incumbent in this position provides plant-wide leadership for chemical protection of the boiler, turbine, and related steam generating equipment per Southern Company guidelines. Additional responsibilities may include: ensuring compliance with federal and state environmental regulations by directing the proper operation of pollution control equipment; ensuring the provision of high quality demineralized water in storage at all times to support plant operations; assisting in managing the O&M and capital budgets; initiating, planning, and managing chemistry projects; and providing leadership and technical assistance on chemistry-related issues to other Southern Company Generation facilities.

Job Duties Include:

  • Operate and maintain water treatment facilities which could include clarifiers, reverse osmosis systems, demineralizers, and waste water treatment plants

  • Perform sampling and analytical testing of various media (process water, stormwater, coal ash, etc.) and monitor plant effluents

  • Calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment and instrumentation

  • Maintain bulk chemical and laboratory supplies inventory

  • Assist in ensuring compliance with applicable environmental and safety & health regulations

  • Routine laboratory testing that supports all unit, scrubber, water treatment plant and waste water processes

Job Requirements

  • BS Degree in chemistry or other field of science with minimum of 12 semester hours of Chemistry required

  • Experience and competency in the use, calibration, and maintenance of laboratory instrumentation/equipment as well as a detailed knowledge of proper analytical methods and techniques is required

  • A broad knowledge of water chemistry is required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Previous experience with chemical treatment systems and analytical equipment in an industrial water treatment facility is preferred. This would include operating and maintaining clarification, filtration, reverse osmosis, and deionization systems

  • Experience with sample collection and analysis to ensure steam water chemistry health and equipment protection is preferred

  • Experience maintaining compliance with federal and state regulations such as NPDES, RCRA, CWA, and CAA is preferred

  • Ability to understand the operation of and to troubleshoot mechanical systems is desirable

  • Proficiency in various Microsoft applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook is preferred

  • Must be available for night, overtime, weekend and holiday work as required.

  • Must be able to work in extreme climates and environments (e.g., cold, hot, dusty, humid).

  • The essential job functions include lifting 50 pounds, working/climbing at heights, and crawling through small confined spaces for inspections.
