Transmission Line Engineer - Support

Forest Park, GA

Job Title: Transmission Line Maintenance Support Engineer

Location: Assigned location will be Forest Park. Please note relocation is not required for this location due to statewide responsibilities, but candidate must live in the state of Georgia and be willing to travel up to 25% of time as required.

Job Summary

The Transmission Line Support Engineer plays a crucial role in collaborating with Transmission Maintenance Centers (TMCs) across Georgia to maintain and ensure the reliability of transmission line facilities. This role is responsible for the development and implementation of annual Line Support inspection, repair, and replacement workplans. Additionally, the engineer will assist TMCs with special projects and data requests, such as outage investigations and hardware failure analysis, while working to continuously improve work practices and materials. The position also involves working with Transmission Line Support Project Managers (PMs) to aid in the scoping and prioritization of the capital transmission line maintenance portfolio. Furthermore, the engineer will represent Georgia Power Transmission Maintenance on GPC and Southern Company maintenance committees as well as actively participate with industry-wide organizations, contributing to the organization through research and innovation.

Job Responsibilities

Lead initiatives for various line maintenance programs (e.g. FAA lighting, line switches, OHGW replacement, etc.)

Develop and manage the Transmission Line Support Workplan including line inspection program and absit repairs.

Assist with statewide Transmission Line Workplan development and implementation.

Develop new and revise existing Transmission Line maintenance and construction Guidelines and Bulletins.

Actively participate on the Southern Company Transmission Line Maintenance committee, Transmission Line Bulletin committee, and other ad hoc committees.

Engage with industry-wide organizations, SCS Line Standards and Lead Product Engineers, outside vendors, and other industry subject matter experts to support research and innovation of new products, hardware, and work practices.

Develop and assist with Transmission Line Maintenance capital projects including supporting field scoping, estimating, and prioritization efforts.

Provide support to TMCs on special projects and data requests including outage investigations and hardware failure analysis.

Assist TMCs and Southern Company Transmission with outage/storm response with field and/or Storm Center activities.

State-wide travel often required with occasional off system travel.

Job Requirements (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills)

Four-year engineering degree is required.

Professional Engineer (PE) License is a plus.

Experience in Electric Transmission Line or Electric Distribution engineering is preferred.

Experience with TEAMS, STOMP, and/or other Asset/Work Management database, systems, and programs is preferred.

Familiarity with project management gated processes is a plus.

Proven analytical and problem-solving skills to aid in root cause analysis, implementation of process improvement efforts, and the development of innovative solutions is required

The ability to build and maintain professional working relationships with internal and external peers and industry working groups is required.

Proven experience in workplan or project development and/or implementation is required.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office products is required.

Ability to communicate insights effectively (verbal/written) is required.

***This position has been identified as a role that will require the use of a Georgia Power fleet vehicle. The following will be required if you are selected for this position:

  • Must have at least one year of verifiable driving experience (Must hold a valid driver’s license for the class vehicle to be operated. Driving permits are not typically considered a valid driver’s license).

  • Must have no revocation of driving privileges within the 36 months prior to application, no convictions of major traffic violations (DUI, hit and run, reckless driving, etc.) within the 12 months prior to application, or any pending charges for a major traffic violation at the time of application.
