Job Title: Transmission Specialist (internal); Transmission Data Specialist, Asset Management & GIS (external)
Location: Office location is in Forest Park, GA: teleworking opportunities available with a hybrid in-person/remote work schedule.
Job Summary:
The Transmission Specialist is responsible for maintaining and updating the inventory database and GIS data for transmission line assets, ensuring data quality and integrity, and recommending process improvements. This position provides training and support to Transmission employees on maintenance workplans, work management systems, and GIS tools. Develops and maintains documentation and supports knowledge-sharing. Utilizes ESRI software for data maintenance, map production, and QA/QC. The ideal candidate should be skilled in managing and organizing multiple tasks and projects concurrently, effectively prioritizing and completing work to meet deadlines and achieve goals. Additionally, they should exhibit strong teamwork capabilities while also being able to handle tasks independently with success.
Job Responsibilities:
Responsible for updating and maintaining the inventory database and Geographic Information System (GIS) data for 11,000+ transmission line assets in proprietary software, requiring proficiency in data manipulation and a basic understanding of transmission line systems.
Ensure data reliability by establishing data quality and integrity standards, defining clear data expectations, and addressing data quality errors effectively.
Recommend improvements to the processes, tools, and effort to enhance the effectiveness of the team.
Support and train Transmission line crew members, foreman and engineers on Southern Company Transmission maintenance workplan philosophy, work management systems and GIS tools
Support Southern Company Transmission maintenance workplan philosophy by training Transmission employees and creating, exporting and importing work orders
Produce official reports including FERC Form 1 and Schedule 26.
Provide customer service and support to Integrated Transmission System (ITS) participants
Member of the Transmission Storm Desk Team
Developing and maintaining documentation pertaining to support responsibilities and tasks.
Maintain technical proficiency and support the knowledge-sharing approach within the team.
Follow through on all aspects of assignments to ensure quality solutions and increased value is delivered to our customers.
Model and support employee-led safety culture and human performance initiatives.
The position will include activities in an ESRI software environment, including but not limited to data maintenance, map production, QA/QC and representing user needs during application development.
Education:
B.S in GIS, geography, engineering, information technology or related field
OR
If No degree, minimum of 3 years of direct experience with asset data management and/or Geographic Information System (GIS) data in the utility industry, demonstrating a solid understanding of industry practices and standards required.
Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Experience in analyzing, troubleshooting, and manipulating data is required.
Experience with STOMP and/or other Asset Management Database is a preferred.
Ability to manage and organize multiple tasks and projects simultaneously, ensuring timely completion and prioritization of work to meet deadlines and achieve objectives is required.
Understanding of electric utility engineering work practices and Transmission line construction is a plus.
Knowledge of industry standards and best practices related to transmission projects is a plus.
Ability to analyze spatial and tabular data, support analytics, and provide detailed reports is required.
Data management skills with experience in writing and/or using SQL queries is preferred.
Strong skills with Microsoft Access is preferred.
Experience supporting ArcGIS Server and/or ArcGIS Portal is preferred.
Experience with relational databases is a plus (e.g., ORACLE, SQL SERVER).
Ability to communicate insights effectively (verbal/written) is required.
Proven experience in developing and implementing QC/QA plans and procedures is a plus.
