System Protection & Control Applications Engineer

JOB SUMMARY

This job exists at Mississippi Power Company to provide for the safe & reliable operation of the transmission & distribution systems through the application of protective relays and relaying systems. This position will be responsible for performing system studies for the purpose of calculating protective relay settings. In addition, this position provides technical support for the System Protection field personnel in troubleshooting protective relaying systems and in analyzing system events & disturbances.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform system studies for the purpose of calculating protective relay settings

  • Analyze system events to verify protective relay and substation equipment performance

  • Provide assistance to System Protection field personnel while performing protective relay commissioning

  • Provide assistance to division maintenance personnel while performing troubleshooting on substation equipment control schemes

  • Understand protective relaying & utility control circuitry and have the ability to troubleshoot

  • Investigate incorrect and questionable operations of substation protective relay & control schemes

  • Participate on system-wide committees responsible for the development and maintenance of control wiring standards.

  • Provide configuration information for substation remote terminal units (RTU's)

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education Requirements

  • A Bachelors degree in engineering is required. A specialty in Electrical Engineering and Power is desired

  • Previous experience in transmission or distribution power system protection is desired

Experience Requirements

  • Previous experience with electromechanical & microprocessor-based protective relays and/or control schemes is highly recommended

  • Previous field experience is desired

  • Basic understanding of protective relay & utility control circuitry is desired

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Understanding of three-phase, AC power

  • Strong electrical blueprint/schematic reading

  • Sufficient mathematical background to work with three-phase power, voltages, currents and phase angles

  • Strong computer skills and be able to investigate & test electrical protection & control systems

  • Must work well in a team environment and exhibit good communication skills (both oral & written)

  • Proven troubleshooting skills
