Location: Successful candidate will report to the Operating Headquarters listed above and must live within a reasonable commuting distance to the designated Operating Headquarters. Relocation assistance is available for qualified candidates if needed.


The Area Reliability Engineer’s primary responsibility is to maintain system reliability in his or her assigned region. The Area Reliability Engineer will also participate in team efforts to maintain overall system reliability for Georgia Power Company throughout the state as needed. The successful candidate must ascribe to and be a champion of our Core Safety Beliefs. Safety and quality are paramount in this position. Therefore, the successful candidate will be expected to incorporate appropriate safety measures into all aspects of the job. In addition, he or she must plan and complete projects efficiently, on schedule, and without service interruptions.

The Area Reliability Engineer partners with region personnel to identify the root cause of reliability issues and to take specific measures to correct problems on the distribution system. Specifically, he or she will be responsible for developing and coordinating construction of reliability improvement projects for the Area. This work will include working with region engineers and management to address specific customer concerns and to help the region proactively identify and address areas of poor performance before complaints occur. The Area Reliability Engineer will perform circuit improvement studies within the region as well as in other regions to support statewide reliability projects. In addition, the Area Reliability Engineer must partner with the statewide reliability engineers to ensure that corporately funded reliability projects are designed to maximize effectiveness. Ultimately the Area Reliability Engineer will assume full responsibility for the success of reliability-centered efforts in the Area.

The responsibilities of this position also include team work with the Distribution Automation group for commissioning, testing, and maintaining distribution power line equipment, protective relays, controls, and communication equipment. The Area Reliability Engineer will perform, in conjunction with the Distribution Automation group, all work needed to program and commission any electronic device installed on the distribution system. Duties include working with and around low voltage.

The successful candidate will be the Area’s protection and coordination expert and will be responsible for initiating all breaker relay settings requests in the Area. He or she will also review all main line protective device installations to ensure proper coordination as well as adherence to Company reliability strategies. When system upgrades occur, the Area Reliability Engineer must make certain that protective equipment is sized appropriately, both in terms of load carrying capacity and interrupting capability.

The Area Reliability Engineer will be expected to be a technical expert and is required to demonstrate the skills obtained in Level II Distribution Certification. He or she will provide expertise on resolution of customer problems and other technical issues when needed. This position must review TCMS outage data to ensure accuracy and to identify trends in performance. Breaker and other device operations will be investigated to ensure proper coordination and to take local corrective action when necessary. In addition, this position will assist Distribution Planning, Area Planning and the Renewable Resources group with projects in his or her area and is responsible for determining the proper location and characteristics of any protective devices. The Reliability Engineer will coordinate SCADA activities in his or her area and provide training to region personnel on devices and other hardware.

Although this position is technically advanced, it will be essential for the successful candidate to build and maintain effective working relationships with region engineers, supervisors, and managers. The Area Reliability Engineer must be visible and responsive to the Area and provide clear, professional advice and counsel on specific issues. He or she must be an exceptional communicator that can quickly build rapport with Area personnel.


Education Requirements:

  • BS in Engineering or Engineering Technology or related field(Math, Science); 4 year degree required.

  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification is a plus.

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred.

Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum of 3 years operations experience required in one or more of the following areas: Electric Power Distribution Operations, Electric Power Transmission Operations, Protection & Control (P&C) Field Services, P&C Applications.

  • Candidate must have knowledge of Section 0 and make safety his or her top priority.

  • Knowledge of electrical operations, distribution systems, underground and overhead construction practices is preferred.

  • Must be capable of producing designs that will support reliable ongoing service for the customer

  • Must be an effective negotiator who can protect our interests while serving the customer’s needs.

  • Working knowledge of the NESC.

  • Knows how to use applications to estimate all types of work orders.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft office products and other related engineering software systems preferred.

  • Working knowledge of CymTCC and CymDist is preferred.

  • Proven experience in writing and executing switching orders.

  • Ability to prioritize and organize work.

  • Excellent project management skills that lead to desired results.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet strict deadlines.

  • Ability to work well with internal and external customers as well as other team members.

  • Proactive communication skills.

  • Capable of building positive relationships with other departments such as sales, customer service, area planning, and power quality.

  • Knowledge of the Distribution Bulletins and other relevant Company guidelines.

  • Must be substation qualified and hold an ITS key.

Other Requirements:

  • Candidate must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

  • Position requires walking through rough and uneven terrain.

  • Candidate must be able to lift or move approximately 25 pounds of equipment and materials.

  • Prior experience using hand tools and test equipment to repair mechanical and/or electrical equipment is desired.

  • Must be willing to serve in the on-call rotation at the assigned work location.

  • Availability for emergency assistance after hours, nights, weekends and holidays is required. Supporting restoration efforts in state and out of state is required.

  • Must be available to travel overnight and provide statewide support while working alone and driving to remote locations.

  • Candidate must currently hold a valid Driver's License.

  • A thorough background check and drug test (including nicotine) will be conducted prior to employment (after a job offer is extended).
