AMI Network Engineer


JOB SUMMARY: This position will join a team of dedicated professionals in the AMI Solutions (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) organization. The team is responsible for the continuous delivery of valid data from smart-points (gas automated reading devices or modules) to the head-end system and the further delivery of that data into enterprise and operational systems. This position serves as the primary RF support engineer responsible for managing the day-to-day operations and maintenance activities of the Nicor Gas AMI network, including working with other departments within Southern Company to meet department SLAs and remediate issues. The position will also assist with analyzing network issues at specific customer locations and make recommendations on possible network-related remediation actions.

The successful candidate is expected to display a team-based mindset and will often collaborate with others, both internal and external to the company, to deliver the best results possible.


Education, Certifications/Licenses:


Preferred: BA/BS Degree or equivalent

Related Work Experience:


•5 years’ experience in RF, AMI/AMR, Cellular is required

•Experience supporting wireless carrier and/or AMI/AMR equipment


•Experience developing and operating Measures of Performance and Measures of Effectiveness that are used for traceability to ensure specified performance thresholds are met

•Applicant may possess a combination of equivalent education and work experience.

Specific Skills & Knowledge:


•Knowledge of IT processes and back-end systems associated with transporting data from Smart Points/gas modules to the Head-end, including data collectors, RF, WAN and LAN (wired and wireless) data communication systems

•RF expertise in a wireless or AMI/AMR environment

•Good understanding of RF Principles

•Proficiency with mapping software, including Google Earth Pro and other tools

•Understanding of RF spectrum analysis to troubleshoot and make recommendations on network performance issues, ultimately supporting field operations staff to resolve site-specific RF communication issues

•Knowledge of Federal Communications Commission rules and regulations to ensure regulatory compliance

•Experience with Vendor Management

•Proficiency with Microsoft and other computer software (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio)

•Effective oral and written communications skills with the ability to convey complex technical issues

•Ability to build relationships, to communicate and work with all levels of management, vendors, and other internal and external groups and customers and exhibit positive influence at all levels


•General understanding of utility operations is a plus

•Proficiency with performing propagation analysis with tools such as Techwizard, Vertical Mapper, Atoll Radio Planning, Planet EV or similar propagation analysis

•General knowledge of budgeting process related to managing Capital and O&M activities

•Experience with mapping software such as Google Earth Pro or similar mapping software would be a plus


Functional Expertise:

•Lead the operations and maintenance (O&M) support activities related to the AMI network infrastructure

•Develop and maintain the backhaul strategy of the system

•Provide root-cause analysis and troubleshooting of the AMI network

•Assist with the evaluation and assessment of network site infrastructure including antenna systems, repeaters, and signal amplifiers

•Perform analysis and process support for legacy and emerging wireless AMI technologies (FlexNet)

•Knowledge of Federal Communications Commission rules and regulations to ensure regulatory compliance

•Conduct RF Analysis (i.e. radio propagation modeling and prediction, interference analysis, and intermodulation studies) as needed, to help meet department SLAs, both for existing and new service locations.

•Lead the planning and implementation for new AMI network infrastructure, as needed

Business Acumen:

•Develop and maintain key performance indicators for network activities

•Develop strategies to provide O&M savings over time

•Work with Internal / External partners to administer maintenance activities of the AMI Network

•Manage the tuning efforts of the end devices

•Manage the daily operations of the network management software, including the Sensus NetMetrics product

•Provide root-cause analysis and troubleshooting of the AMI network


•Establish strong relationships with key internal/external partners, including with the internal telecom team and with Sensus (network vendor)

•Ability to work with customers, vendors, and internal staff to recognize and mitigate RF noise and other operational issues

Explanation:Daily monitoring of network performance and remediation actions will be required. Employee will have a lot of

latitude for actions related to tuning and operational issue remediation.Periodic after hours and weekend work may be required.

Assignments are quite varied and highly complex.

Explanation: There are a few operational reports and data analysis actions that may be repetitive, but daily

operational analysis will require analysis across multiple data sources to identify the root cause of the

issue.There are many situations that will require complex analysis and troubleshooting and coordination with other members of the AMI Solutions team.
