THE POSITION IS A JOB GRADE 2, 3, OR 4 DEPENDING ON EXPERIENCE.

This position is being posted as part of a job family.

The position may be filled at either the Associate Buyer (Grade 2), Buyer (Grade 3), or Sr. Buyer (Grade 4) level. Individuals who demonstrate advanced skills in terms of work experience, education and certifications may be eligible for the advanced grade.

JOB SUMMARY

The purpose of this position is to source, dispatch, and expedite purchase orders for materials and services from suppliers at the best possible cost, while meeting requirements of quality, reliability of source and urgency of need as determined by business unit. This role will also create basic contracts, RFI's, RFP's, bid evaluations; conduct negotiations; and issues contracts for materials and services. The Buyer position will support Category Managers in the strategic sourcing of materials and services.

Higher grade levels will work independently. Tasks assigned to a more senior buyer often involve the consistent recognition and development of new or improved products/processes or techniques that substantially impact how Southern Company Gas does business on a daily basis.

POSITION MAY SPECIALIZE IN ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING DISCIPLINES

Functional Expertise:

• Select preferred suppliers that provide the most economical cost consistent while delivering quality standards and specifications of purchased assets and resources.

• Resolve technical and pricing issues, and ensure schedules are met.

• Source requisitions and dispatch purchase orders for internal customers according to Company policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Business Acumen:

• Ensure that Supply Chain policies, procedures, and guidelines are adhered to and that all required contracts receive appropriate Legal and Risk review.

• Support business units with inquiries and requests (e.g., field technicians, sales personnel, customer services, warranty returns… etc); support internal customers and suppliers in executing the requisition to pay process.

• Work with warehouse coordinator to track and monitor supplier returns and credits

• Track and maintain PM Agreements for commercial customers.

Engagement:

• Build effective relationships by maintaining a strong team partnership between internal and external customers/suppliers; ensure that Supply Chain policies, procedures and guidelines are followed.

• Support business units and external customers with inquiries and requests (e.g., field technicians, sales personnel and customer services).

• Be prepared to provide training to internal customers on Supply Chain systems, policies and procedures.

• Sr. Buyer, may supervise Associate Buyer and Buyer.

Driving Results:

• Source requisitions from all Company locations in compliance with Company policies, procedures, and guidelines.

• Manage/follow-up on match exceptions, acknowledgements; expedite the processes involved in shipping and receiving orders.

• Research quality issues and resolution as well as shipping and billing discrepancies.

• Conduct strategic sourcing activities for low dollar spend projects within category families.

Education, Certifications/Licenses:

Required:

• BA/BS degree or related experience.

Related Work Experience:

Preferred:

• 1-3 years related experience in Supply Chain.

• MS Excel – intermediate proficiency.

• MS Word – intermediate proficiency.

• MS PowerPoint – intermediate proficiency.

• Organization skills.

• Self-motivated and able to work independently.

Preferred:

• Basic awareness of ERP Module/System (PeopleSoft preferred).

• Negotiation skills.

LEVEL 3

Education, Certifications/Licenses:

Required:

• BA/BS degree or related experience.

Preferred:

• Professional procurement or supply chain certification (C.P.M., CPSM, CPPB, and/or CPPO).

Related Work Experience:

Required:

• 2 years of progressive levels of buying or supply chain/procurement experience or training.

Specific Skills & Knowledge:

Required:

• MS Excel – intermediate proficiency.

• MS Word – intermediate proficiency.

• MS PowerPoint – intermediate proficiency.

• Basic awareness of ERP Module/System (PeopleSoft preferred)

• Organization skills.

• PeopleSoft Financials or ERP Module/System – intermediate proficiency.

LEVEL 4

Preferred:

• Professional procurement or supply chain certification (C.P.M., CPSM, CPPB, and/or CPPO).

Related Work Experience:

Required:

• 5 years of progressive levels of buying or supply chain/procurement experience or training.

Preferred:

• 2 years of supervisory experience
