Job Summary

The purpose of this position is to manage and supervise projects designed by Nicor Gas Engineering’s contract engineering design firms. Design projects may include: main replacement or relocation (initiated by company, third party, or compliance related), regulator station design, pressure improvements, and new business projects. The Engineer will support the contract engineering design firms while projects progress through the various phases of the project while ensuring regulatory codes and company specifications, standards, and safety procedures are being adhered to and in certain cases may directly influence the course of a project. The Engineer will be responsible for various project engineering, project management, and problem-solving activities associated with many small, medium, to large multi-faceted projects progressing at any one time. Project engineering duties may include, but not limited to examining engineering calculations, analysis and design, constructability reviews, and permitting requirements. Project management functions may include, but not limited to scope development, design and project oversight, ensuring necessary multi-discipline components are included as needed. The Engineer should be self-motivated, flexible, and able to handle multiple tasks, including decision making and performing tasks independently while working closely with design firms and individual engineers to ensure that objectives are met.

This position may be filled at Intermediate Engineer (Level 4), Engineer (Level 5), or Senior Engineer (Level 6).

Functional Expertise:

• Serves as project engineer/manager; Provide supervision support to design firms, assists in determining project scope on the development of a complete project design, reviews project requirements, proposals, calculations, planning layouts and/or summaries.

• Supports design firms who coordinate project activities with other operating units and facilitate participation of appropriate staff on project.

• Oversees projects, including engineering, material procurement, accounting functions, permitting, and construction support efforts on multiple projects at any given time.

• Provides post design release support including reviewing and approving permitting agency comments and/or field changes.

• Provides technical guidance to design firms, performs systematic reviews of work and facilitates questions to resolve difficult issues.

• Works with Engineering Manager on project prioritization lists used to support company goals and objectives.

• Reviews design firms’ design options or recommendations to improve system optimization. Assesses feasibility of engineering solutions.

Business Acumen:

• Reviews engineering designs to provide for the most cost-effective, long-term solution for project.

• Works with Procurement and other necessary departments in facilitating invitation to bid, estimating, establishing pre-construction dates for scheduling of awards, approvals, and construction, when assigned.

• Examines design firms’ projects for constructability, compliance with company specifications, and alignment with Engineering’s design standards and expectations.

• Applies knowledge of pipeline design, regulator facilities, valves and procedures as they apply to natural gas engineering. Codes and specifications include CFR 49 Part 192 and Nicor Gas Operations & Maintenance Manual.

Engagement:

• Supports design firms’ collaboration with system planning, construction operations, system operations, corrosion, land services, environment, DOT liaison, and/or New Business to produce safe, on time, and effective designs.

• Participates in various monthly project status meetings.

• Communicates and provides feedback to design firms on scope, quality, and/or timeliness of projects.

Driving Results:

• Anticipates and identifies issues that put projects at risk. Effectively implements corrective actions.

• Ensures designs are released to construction to meet schedule and agency timelines.

• Tracks projects from assignment through construction. Responsible for tracking and reporting on project status, target date variances, and other metrics.

Education, Experience, Certifications/Licenses: Level 4

Required:

• BA/BS degree in engineering from ABET accredited university.

• 2 years of progressive engineering experience in project management, project engineering, or construction management of natural gas or other pipeline facilities.

Preferred:

• Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Certificate

• Degree in Civil, Industrial, or Mechanical Engineering

Education, Experience, Certifications/Licenses: Level 5

Required:

• BA/BS degree in engineering from ABET accredited university.

• 4 years of progressive engineering experience in project management, project engineering, or construction management of natural gas or other pipeline facilities.

• 1 years familiarity and experience with Gas Safety regulations or utility pipeline construction practices

Preferred:

• Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Certificate

• Degree in Civil, Industrial, or Mechanical Engineering

Education, Experience, Certifications/Licenses: Level 6

Required:

• BA/BS degree in engineering from ABET accredited university.

• 7 years of progressive engineering experience in project management, project engineering, or construction management of natural gas or other pipeline facilities.

• 3 years familiarity and experience with Gas Safety regulations or utility pipeline construction practices

Preferred:

• Professional Engineer Certification (PE), Project Management Certificate (PMP), or Advanced Degree (MBA, MS, MA)

• Degree in Civil, Industrial, or Mechanical Engineering
