Summary

The Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) performs inspections on welded products across our manufacturing plants. The CWI utilizes magnification and stress equipment to ensure the products meet specifications and quality standards according to design drawings, work procedures, Methods of Manufacturing (MoM’s) and knowledge of welding. The individual is also responsible for auditing the setup of welding machinery and ensuring welding team members operate equipment correctly and apply proper welding techniques to achieve high quality standards.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • High school diploma or GED.

  • Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) from the American Welding Society (AWS) with the ability to train co-workers.

  • 2+ years’ experience working as a CWI or similar position.

  • Prior experience writing and modifying Welding Procedure Specifications.

  • Prior experience certifying welders and developing a qualification process.

  • Ability to read and interpret engineering and shop drawings.

  • Experience with AWS D-1.1 and ASME section IX standards.

  • Non-destructive Testing (NDT) experience, i.e., Magnetic Particle Testing.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to train and interact with team members at all levels of the organization.

  • Basic understanding of Lean Manufacturing concepts and QMS.

  • Experience in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel).

  • Excellent organizational skills.

  • Ability to multitask and deliver desired results on each task.

  • Self-starter with a demonstrated sense of urgency and ownership within your area of responsibility.

  • Knowledge and experience in ERP Systems (SAP, Epicor, IFS, etc.) preferred.

  • Additional ICC Special Inspection certifications preferred.

  • Must be able to travel <10%. On rare occasion the CWI may be required to travel to our Durham, NC plant to conduct assessments, inspections, or attend key leadership meetings at an advisor capacity.

Essential Functions

  • Adhere to all safety requirements and protocols.

  • Meet AWS standards for quality and safety.

  • Review engineering design drawings prior to release to ensure clarity and accuracy of weld symbols, instructions, and intent.

  • Ensure that the welding equipment, materials, and procedures used are appropriate for the task and are performed in compliance with design specifications and regulatory standards.

  • Perform all tests required in accordance with AWS 1 and/or ASME section IX.

  • Record and maintain inspection test data.

  • Perform pressure test in accordance with UL 142.

  • Perform cost analysis of weld efficiency.

  • Identify and report defective materials or questionable conditions to the Welding Team Leads and Supervisors.

  • Assist in the procurement of new welding equipment or upgrades to current equipment.

  • Review Welding Work Instructions to improve quality and increase efficiency.

  • Establish welding procedures to guide production and welding personnel relating to specification restrictions, material processes, pre- and post-heating requirements.

  • Stay up to date with new welding and manufacturing industry practices for continuous improvement opportunities.

  • Utilize conventional and precision measuring instruments.

  • Accurately document applicable job, product and quality information utilizing computer and paper documents as required.

  • Verify that welders and equipment have been qualified in accordance with applicable standards and that they maintain appropriate qualifications as required for the scope of the work.

  • Maintain the work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition.

  • Perform preventative maintenance on equipment and tools as required/requested.

  • Focus on quality and speed, performing all tasks with a sense of urgency toward excellence.

  • Complete job requirements with minimal supervision.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Management Team.

Physical Demands

10% sitting, clerical work.90% walking and standing – shop floor and/or uneven surfaces. Other physical demands may require squatting, bending, and reaching for extended lengths of time. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.

Work Environment

Work environment consists of a combination of a climate-controlled factory setting and an open office setting.
