Mechanic (Journeyman) – Plant McIntosh, Rincon, GA
Summary
This position is responsible for performing mechanical maintenance activities on electric generating units and balance of plant systems to ensure safe and reliable operation. Maintenance activities include preventative maintenance, predictive maintenance, planned and unplanned corrective maintenance on both safety-related and non-safety-related components. Maintenance responsibilities include, but is not limited to, maintaining and/or repairing power plant equipment; planning work and following procedures/prints to install and maintain equipment; performing assembly and disassembly of components using proper rigging and lifting techniques; troubleshooting equipment; communicating with plant supervision, plant operations personnel and/or plant maintenance personnel; and responding to call outs in the event work is required after normal working hours including weekends, nights, and storm duty as necessary to support plant operations. In addition, these positions will maintain plant maintenance records in the Maximo® computer-based work order system and ensure all work complies with environmental permits and regulations. The incumbents are expected to perform all work safely and with the utmost concern for their personal safety and the safety of other employees.
May be required to support mechanical maintenance activities at other GPC Coastal Plants to include Plant McManus (Brunswick, GA) and Plant Robins (Warner Robins, GA).
Education Requirements:
High School Diploma - desired
2-year Technical degree in mechanical field or equivalent training - preferred
Experience Requirements:
- Two years’ experience as Journeyman Mechanic or equivalent experience
Job Knowledge
Must have experience repairing pumps, valves, gearboxes, etc.
Preferred experience welding (Stick, MIG, TIG)
Must have experience using an oxygen/acetylene torch
Must have experience using precision measurement tools
Must have experience aligning pumps and motors
Must have experience rigging and lifting heavy equipment
Must be able to read and understand plant system and equipment prints
Must be able to read, understand and apply technical instruction manuals
Must be able to use power and hand tools
Must possess intermediate computer skills (Microsoft Office applications, Maximo a plus)
Intermediate skills at running lathes, end mills, etc., preferred
Must have skill in the diagnosis of defects and failures of specialized equipment
Must have the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
Experience disassembling and reassembling combustion turbine units, preferred
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Qualifying on pre-employment tests are required including aptitude test, journeyman mechanical knowledge test, journeyman mechanical performance skills test, and physical abilities test to move forward in the selection process
Ability to perform physically demanding activities (i.e., walking, climbing ladders, lifting heavy equipment) while working safely in all types of weather Behavioral Attributes

This position is covered by the collective bargaining agreement between Georgia Power and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW). The union determines seniority which is used to select shift, vacation, and holidays.
